Palabora Mining Company Limited started operations in the mid-60s. They extract and beneficiate copper and vermiculite from their mines in the Limpopo Province, and is South Africa’s only producer of refined copper.
Smelting of copper iron in the Phalaborwa district occurred centuries ago, and copper of remarkable purity was produced as early as the 8th century, from the artifacts found in the area.
A series of violent volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, gave rise to the Palabora Igneous Complex, which contains a unique variety of minerals – copper, phosphates, magnetite, gold, silver, platinum, uranium, zirconium, nickel, and palladium.
