Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL), formerly GVM Metals Ltd, focuses on the acquisition, exploration and development of coal projects, both thermal and metallurgical, in South Africa. They also have a branch in Perth, Australia.
Most South African coals are good thermal coals, but do not tend to display the plasticity under heat required of coking coals. Mostly coals in the Limpopo region of South Africa make coking coal quality after suitable processing.
Coal of Africa mining areas:
- Mooiplaats – located in the Ermelo coal fields, CoAL has a 100% interest
- Vele – project is situated in the Limpopo Province
- Makhado – located north of Soutpansberg, 60km from Musina in the Limpopo Province, CoAL has a 100% interest
- Holfontein – situated near the middle of Sasol’s Secunda coal production area
