Borehole Pumps Offer Life and Hope

In an essentially arid land like South Africa, the threat of crop failure and the resulting need to import growing amounts of grain is ever present. Most of the areas now being farmed would never sustain crops without some form of irrigation. A nearby river or dam may provide the source in some cases but, in many parts, the farmer is forced to seek for his water below ground. Given a suitable aquifer, borehole pumps will then be able to complete the task.

If required purely for irrigation, a shallow aquifer, if present, can safely provide the necessary water and may lie just a few metres below the surface. For domestic use, although some purification treatment will still be needed, deeper wells served by deeper aquifers are definitely less prone to surface contamination.

Although suitable wells may be either dug or driven, modern practice is to drill. The process inserts a metal casing around the water pipes and the flow is provided by a pump that may be either submerged or located at the well head.

The steel casing that surround the water pipe acts to prevent the collapse of the surrounding soil while also preventing the water from contaminants in that soil. Sometimes aquifers can be so deep that effective pumping can only be sustained with the use of multi-stage units. These contain a number of impeller blades arranged in series that allows each one to augment the action of the proceeding one. These units act like several separate borehole pumps and are thus able to maintain the high pressure and flow rates needed for reliable irrigation.

Submerged pumps are generally more effective than those mounted above ground. They also carry the distinct advantage that they don’t require any priming prior to use and will start pumping instantly, at the touch of a switch.
