Implats is one of the most significant producers of platinum and platinum group metals (PGMs) globally. It owns various platinum mining operations which include Impala Platinum, located near the world-renowned Bushveld Complex near Rustenburg in South Africa, Marula Platinum 50 km north of Burgersfort in the Limpopo Province, Two Rivers south of the town of Steelpoort in the Mpumalanga province, as well as two mining operations in Zimbabwe – Zimplats and Mimosa.
Platinum was first discovered in the Bushveld Igneous Complex in 1924, Impala Platinum was established in the mid 1960′s, initial production commenced in 1969, and by early 1990’s Impala had become a 1 million ounce per annum platinum producer.
