Thabazimbi Mine is owned and operated by Kumba Iron Ore. Thabazimbi Mine is a small operation with a limited life of mine. It is an established open pit operation, with ore processed through a single processing facility.

Mining operations began at Thabazimbi Mine in 1934, first underground,  then on the surface from 1942. Underground mining was halted in 1998, and  current mining activities take place in five pits.

• Open pit operation
• Relatively small operation
• Conventional opencast mining methods used (including blasting, drilling, loading and hauling)
• Limited life of mine – 2014
• Total iron ore production is sold to ArcelorMittal
• Training is provided free to local people only
