Assmang (originally named The Associated Manganese Mines of South Africa Limited) is owned jointly by African Rainbow Minerals Limited (50%) and Assore Limited (50%). They have three seperately operating Divisions in the three commodities chrome, manganese and iron ore, with mining operations throughout South Africa.
The Iron Ore Division include the high grade Khumani mine and the Beeshoek mine in the Northern Cape around the Kathu and Postmasburg towns.

Sishen Mine is owned and operated by Kumba Iron Ore, and is one of the world’s seven largest open pit mines. The haematite ore mined at Sishen Mine occurs in beds of varying thickness, and the processes of production control fluctuations in the iron content of the ore.

Thabazimbi Mine is owned and operated by Kumba Iron Ore. Thabazimbi Mine is a small operation with a limited life of mine. It is an established open pit operation, with ore processed through a single processing facility.
Mining operations began at Thabazimbi Mine in 1934, first underground, then on the surface from 1942. Underground mining was halted in 1998, and current mining activities take place in five pits.
